Magnum – Wakefield Warehouse 23 – 28 July

I always come away from a Magnum show amazed at the song writing skills of Tony Clarkin.

From fantastic rock anthems that you can sing and clap along to, to the more thought provoking lyrics and melodies of more mellow material.

Tonight was no exception opening up with Solider of the Line and Story Tellers Night before moving onto the title track of the current CD Sacred Blood “Divine” Lies, also from this great CD we had Crazy Old Mothers (a track that went down live as well as I imaged it would), Your Dreams Won’t Die, Twelve Men and True and Princess in Rags.

Throughout Bob Catley held court like only he can. Throw into the mix classics like How Far Jerusalem, All England’s Eyes and the showstopper for me Les Morts Dansant and you have making of a fine show  that had lots of audience participation. Sway along, sing along, clap along all, of this is part of the magic that is a Magnum concert.

Of course the set had to be brought to a close with a great rock anthem so the band wheeled out Vigilante to bring the house down before coming back for a two song encore.

This commenced with the acoustic The Spirit and then the evening closed with Kingdom of Madness.

Sacred Blood “Divine” Lies is a fantastic CD and this was great performance.
