Blackballed + Snakecharmer - Holmfirth 25 January 2014

I enjoyed the slightly quirky rock n roll, (do I detect a slight ZZ Top influence?) served up by support act Blackballed tonight and songs like Broke My Back and Coat of Many Colours (COMC) got everyone at the Picturedrome rocking tonight.

There is a danger that Snakecharmer could be seen as nothing more than a glorified Whitesnake cover band albeit with a couple ex snakes in their ranks, but I don't think that is fair, and the quality of their own blues rock CD marks them out as a a band in their own right in my eyes. To me tonight's set got the balance right between the new material and classic Whitesnake songs.

The band are fronted by excellent vocalist Chris Ousey who can sing blues songs with great swagger and impact. Those that know the band will know the other members read like a who's who of Rock With harry James on Drums, Adam Wakeman on Keyboards, Laurie Wisefield on guitar and of course ex snakes Micky Moody and Neil Murry. Moody is a great guitarist with a natural talent to play the blues.

From the Snakecharmer CD we were treated to the likes of A Little Rock and Roll, Accident Prone and Smoking Gun. The highlight for many of course were the classic Whitesnake songs that were thrown into the set like Walking in the Shadow of the Blues, Take Me with You and Hear I go Again. The encore was a great original blues style Fool for Your Loving.

A great show, great entertainment , don't hesitate to go and see both of these bands.
